Library News

WORLD BOOK DAY  On Thursday 1st March, World Book Day, local children’s author, Carol Hedges visited our Library to talk to all Year 7 girls. Year 7 boys had welcomed Mark Walden, writer of the HIVE series earlier in the year.

Carol is well known for her Spy girl series, which is very popular with girls at SBS. She talked of how she saw a gap in the market for spy thrillers aimed at girls, whilst Anthony Horowitz, Charlie Higson etc. wrote this genre for the boys. Carol used her relationship with her daughter throughout the series as well as lots of autobiographical details. The girls enjoyed the morning as Carol used her experience as an English teacher to enthuse them about reading. Brenda Parkhouse, an independent bookseller, provided Spygirl books to be sold and signed that morning. We hope to work with Carol again as the event was such a resounding success.

SPEAKER’S CORNER takes place every Friday 13.45-14.00 in the Library. All are welcome to come along to hear about the travels or hobbies of various students or members of staff. If you would like to volunteer to take part please email Mrs Syme at library@simonballe.herts.sch.uk Please note that this is an excellent way of developing your presentation techniques as well as your speaking and listening skills.

Recent subjects of talks include ‘Recommended Reads’, ‘Beards’, ‘The History of the Olympic Games’ and ‘The Titanic’.
